Monulkiri is the most sparsely populated province in the country, with just 2 people per sq km. Almost half of the 35,000 inhabitants come the Pnong minority group, with other minorities making up much of the rest of the population. The lack of people adds to something of a wild – east atmosphere and there are certainly a lot of wild animals, including tigers, elephants, bears and leopards, in the more remote parts of the province.

There has recently been an influx of refugees returning from the Thai border area which has pushed the province forward a little. Rice farming is picking up, but hunting remains the profession of choice of many minorities. Road are bad throughout the province, but several have been earmarked for improvement, which could help speed up travel. The road from Phnom Penh is now in pretty good shape most of the way, bringing journey times down to seven hours, and this is driving an influx of domestic tourists each weekend.

Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri Province
Sen Monorom, the provincial capital of Modulkiri, is a charming little community set amid rolling hills. The center of town, a village realy has two lakes, leading some dreamers to call it “The Switzerland of Cambodia”. The area around Sen Monorom has plenty of minority villages and picturesque waterfalls, making it a pleasant place to pass a few nights. Many of the Pnong people from nearby villages come into Sen Monorom to trade, and the distinctive baskets they carry on their backs makes them easy to distinguish from the immigrant Khmers. High winds billow throughout the year and it can get pretty fresh at night, so bring some warm clothing.

The big news is that tarmac has finally come to town and several roads were being surfaced at the time of writing. It might have been a good idea to tarmac the run way first.

Rum Near Waterfall, Mondulkiri Province
Rum Near Waterfall is only 10.5 kilometer from the provincial town. This wonderful waterfall is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Mondulkiri. Sen Monorom Waterfall, Mondulkiri Province
Sen Monorom Waterfall is one of the most beautiful scenic spot in Cambodia. The picturesque water fall is surrounded by lush green tropical vegetation. The waterfall located at Sen Monorum District is only 5 kilometers from the provincial town. Drive down the red soil trail to reach the Sen Monorom Waterfall, Mondulkiri. You can also travel from Phnom Penh or Kratie to the location of the water fall. It takes about 7 to 9 hours drive to reach there. The best time to visit the place is February.

Mondulkiri is a small-town in the eastern region of Cambodia. Bou Sra Water Fall, Mondulkiri Province

Mondulkiri Bou Sra Waterfall is located at Pich Chinda District. The site is about 43 kilometer from the provincial town. While you set out for sightseeing follow red soiled road that runs outside the town. Drive about an hour to reach Boo Sra Waterfall in Mondulkiri.

The most beautiful waterfall in Modulkiri, Bou Sra waterfall has three cascading levels. At the first stage the waterfall has 15 meter diameter. During rainy season the height remains about 8 to 12 meters and it gets 10 to15-meter high in dry season.

The Second stage of Bou Sra Waterfall, Mondulkiri has 23-meter diameter and 15-meter to 20-meter height in rainy season. In the dry season the diameter decreases and the height increases. The waterfall shrinks to 20-meter in diameter while reaches a 18-meter to 25-meter height in dry season. The second stage of the waterfall has nearly 150 meter distance from the first stage of Bou Sra Waterfall in Mondulkiri.

At the third stage the waterfall is much stronger and the waters flows with more speed than the second stage. It is not possible for the general tourists to reach the site of the third stage as it is located in the dense forest. If you are an adventure lover you can try to reach the third stage of Bou Sra Waterfall, Mondulkiri. But before you set out, take enough precautions as the route is dangerous and fierce animals lurk behind the bushes.

Pahlung Village, Mondulkiri Province
Pahlung Village is one of the well known tourist attractions in Mondulkiri. It is just an hour’s drive from the main town center. The scenic rustic setting of Pahlung Village, Mondulkiri along with diverse regional culture draws thousands of tourists and travelers.

Is one the popular tourist attractions in Mondulkiri. The sanctuary is located amidst the Eastern Plains which is known for the sprawling rain forests and beautiful rivers. Thousands of tourists and nature lovers visit Phnom Prich Sanctuary, Mondulkiri to experience the idyllic scenic landscape.

Phnom Prich Sanctuary in Mondulkiri is a part of the initiative undertake by the Cambodian Government to conserve the diverse flora and fauna in the country. The sanctuary forms part of the 1 million hectare of land in the Eastern Plains. The WWF has also helped the government in the undertaking.

The Phnom Prich Sanctuary is home to some of the endangered species in the country. There are wide varieties of mammals, birds and reptiles. Some of the protected species in the sanctuary are tiger, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, jungle cat, and deer and so on. Some bird species include sarus, crane and giant ibises. Plantation of Pinetrees, Mondulkiri Province
Plantation of Pinetrees is one of the main tourist attractions in Mondulkiri. It is a beautiful spot full of pine trees. Plantation of Pinetrees, Mondulkiri is visited by lots of tourists from all over the world.

The Plantation of Pinetrees in Mondulkiri is located just 6 kms away from the main town center of Senmonorom and is easily accessible from different corners of the province. According to historical records, the history of the pine trees date back to ancient ages during the reign of Kum Reas NiYum. It takes around 20 minutes to travel to the spot by car via the National Road 14. The place is also ideal for excursion trips and picnic.

The Plantation of Pinetrees is located on a highland and some of the pine trees grow up to a tall height. The path to the highland has a scenic surrounding and is covered with pebbles and fallen leaves. The place looks wonderful like a carpet of golden color. Travelers can amidst the garden and rest under the pine trees.

Plenty of tours are offered by travel agencies to Plantation of Pinetrees, Mondulkiri. The popularity of the place makes it a wonderful center of eco tourism. There are small hotels and lodging centers around the place. Useful information about the plantation can also be obtained from the tourist board.

Mimong, Mondulkiri Province
Welcome to the wild east, where the gold rush lives on! Mimong district is famous for its gold mines and this has drawn speculators from as far away
Vietnam and China on the trail of wealth. The population of this overgrown village may actually be equal to that of Sen Monorom. Miners descend into the pits on ancient mine carts that are connected to dodgy-looking winches, sometimes going to a depth of 100m or more. It’s not for the faint-hearted and several miners die in accidents each year.

The main problem is getting here, as the road is so bad that it takes about four hours to cover the 40km from Sen Monorom. The road improves slightly on the other side of Mimong and it is possible to carry on to link up with NH7 to Kratie to the west taking another four hours. There is also a major set of falls in the Mimong area called Tan Lung Waterfall, but this is also a nightmare to reach.

Koh Nhek, Mondulkiri Province
This is the final frontier as far as Mondulkiri goes, a remote village in the far north of the province, but a strategic place on the difficult overland route between Sem Monorom and Ratanakiri. There is a big house in town with a friendly owner who accepts foreigners for 10,000r and can prepare some basic food. Ask for ‘Dem Svay’ or mango tree and most villagers can point the way. There are also basic supplies in the village, including beer – well earned once you get here.

The Cambodian military are currently rebuilding the road to Koh Nhek which should improve journey times. It usually takes seven or more hours from Sen Monorom and another four hours or so on to Ban Lung.
